For the majority of this song’s duration, you wonder if the songwriter is flipping the world off, or just making the case for an emotion-free existence. But in typical admirable Relient K fashion, the message runs much deeper. After telling us that we really shouldn’t care about impressive messes, the rationale makes a subtle strike:
But it’s so hard to see the reality
That the end will be the end of things
And our hearts are all we get to bring
So let’s go ahead and make them worth something…
I’m well aware that everything
Is a far cry from all right
I’m well aware that all of us
Can at times, be too uptight
And possibly, the remedy
Is a dose of apathy
You point your finger at you
I’ll point mine right back at me
The cry for apathy is really not a call for apathy at all, but rather a call to responsibility; a call recognize that most of what we spend energy on is fleeting, temporal. A proper apathetic way to be is the way that puts life situations in perspective with an eternal existence.
